The general requirements and expectations for the Religious Education program for our children are described below:

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
for Pre-K to 5th Grade

FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS AND YOUTH

The United States of America provides the opportunity for all people to receive an education. Citizens in turn become active and productive members of Society. However, if a person attended 1st grade, skipped 2 years, attended 4th grade, skipped 4 years, attended 9th grade, skipped 2 years, and finally attended 12th grade, would he/she be considered diploma- worthy and prepared for gainful employment or higher education? Education is not only a right but also a responsibility for the good of the whole community.

At Baptism Parents and Godparents bring their child into God’s Family, the Church, and promise to help that person grow as an active member of God’s Kingdom. To support this promise the Church provides opportunities for formation which should be treated with the same importance and dedication as the aforementioned civil situation.

Therefore:

  1. For as long as a student is in civil education, formal religious education should remain a priority.
  2. Consistent attendance and active participation are the norms.
    • All students are expected to attend all classes and all activities.
    • Families should make every effort to plan other activities so they do not conflict with the Christian Formation sessions.
    • Parents/Guardians should notify Catechist/Teacher of absence and arrange for homework by calling 846-5245 or emailing at hcrossreled@aol.com.
    • Parents/Guardians will be phoned if their student is not in class and there has been no previous notification of absence.
  3. Parental involvement is vital to the growth of the student and the whole religious education experience.
  4. Regular and active celebration of Sunday Eucharist and service to the Church and surrounding community energize the purpose of Christian Formation, which is to be the hands, eyes, voice, feet of Jesus in the World.

FOR STAFF AND VOLUNTEER CATECHISTS

  1. Volunteers are trained, prayerful, Faith-filled, enthusiastic Catechists.
  2. Staff/Catechists will periodically inform parents/guardians of their student’s progress.
  3. Staff will provide retreats and continuing education for volunteers.
  4. Staff will provide opportunities for retreats and continuing education for parents/guardians.

Prayers/Scripture Verses to be Memorized by Grade

4 years old – Sign of the Cross

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Kindergarten – Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

Grade 1 – Hail, Mary/ Glory Be (The Doxology)

Hail, Mary, full of grace! The Lord is with you! Blessed are you among women. Blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy mary, Mother of Fod, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.

Grade 2 – Act of Contrition, Nicene Creed

My God , I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against You whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Amen.

We believe in one God , the Father, the almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God , eternally begotten of the Gather, God from God , light from light, true God from true God , begotten, not made, one in being with the Father.

Through Him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation He came down from heaven. By the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried. On the third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the father. He will come to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son He is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets.

We believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church.

We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Grade 3 – Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virigin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Grade 4 – Hail, Holy Queen

Hail, holy queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate, your eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of your womb, Jesus. O clement, o loving, o sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, o Holy Mother of God , that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

Grade 6 – Psalm 23

The Lord is my shepherd. There is nothing I shall want.
In verdant pastures you give me repose.
Beside restful waters you lead me. You restore my strength.
You guide me along the right path for the sake of your name.
Even when I walk through a dark valley,
I fear no evil for you are with me;
Your rod and your staff give me courage.
You set a table before me in the sight of my foes.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Only goodness and kindness will follow me all the days of my life
And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for years to come.

Grade 7 – The Magnificat (Luke 1: 46-48)

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
My spirit rejoices in God my saviour
For he has looked with favor on his lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed.
The almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.
He has mercy on those who fear him in every generation.
He has shown the strength of his arm,
He has scatttered the proud in their conceit.
He has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
And has lifted up the lowly.
He has filled the hungry with good things
And the rich he has sent away empty.
He has come to the help of his servant israel
For he has remembered his promise of mercy.
The promise he made to our fathers, to abraham
And to his children forever.

Grade 8 – The Angelus

The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary
And she conceived of the holy spirit….Hail Mary, …

Behold the handmaid of the Lord
Be it done to me according to your word… Hail Mary, …

And the word was made flesh
And dwelt among us…. Hail Mary,….

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God,
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray:
Pour forth we beseech you, O Lord, your grace into our hearts that we to whom the incarnation of Christ, your son, was made known by the message of an angel, may, by his passion and cross, be brought to the glory of his resurrection through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grade 9 – Queen Of Heaven (Regina Caeli)

Queen of Heaven, rejoice, Alleluia.
For he whom you were worthy to bear, Alleluia.
Has risen as he said, Alleluia.
Pray for us to God, Alleluia.
Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, Alleluia.
For the Lord is truly risen, Alleluia.

Let us pray:

Father, you were pleased to give joy to the world through the resurrection of your son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Grant, we beseech you, that through the mediation of the virgin mary, his mother, we may come to possess the joys of eternal life. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Grade 10 – Final Prayer Of Eucharistic Benediction

Blessed be God. Blessed be His holy name. Blessed be Jesus Christ, true God and true man. Blessed be the name of Jesus. Blessed be his most sacred heart. Blessed be his most precious blood. Blessed be Jesus in the most holy sacrament of the altar. Blessed be the holy spirit, the consoler. Blessed be the great mother of God, mary most holy. Blessed be her holy and immaculate conception. Blessed be her glorious assumption. Blessed be the name of mary, virgin and mother. Blessed be saint joseph, her most chaste spouse. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints.

Grade 11 – Come, Holy Spirit

Come, holy spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your divine love. Send forth your spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray:

O God, who by the light of the holy spirit, did instruct the hearts of your faithful, grant by the same holy spirit that we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in your consolation.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
