TIME AND TALENT

The time and talents of the members of Holy Cross are used to minister to the needs of the parish, neighborhood and the community.  The Time and Talent Committee is organized into five areas which are:

Parish Life

Administration

Parish Council, Chairperson: Tricia Christian

Finance Council - Anne Johnson

Makes recommendations to the Parish Council concerning all matters of parish finance.

Grounds Committee - Peter McGrath

Involves the supervision of the exterior conditions of the parish property, its maintenance and upkeep.

Cemetery Committee - John Bowman

Oversees the maintenance of Holy Cross Cemetery.

Building Committee - Gus Fagan

Ad Hoc committee plans and carries out building and renovation projects.

Fellowship Activities

Fellowship Committee - Winnie Schamerhorn, and Mary Ann Tucker

Hospitality after Weekend Masses - -Leona Cadieux

Serves refreshments in the Commons after Mass.

Parish receptions, Annual Picnic and Celebrations - Winnie Schamerhorn, and Mary Ann Tucker

Welcoming Committee - Marie and Jim Martin, Arlene and Gene Domalisk, Linda and Jim Purdy

Provides personal greeting to new parishioners and coordinates newcomers’ receptions.

Young at Heart - Celeste Costas

Seniors gather monthly for spiritual and social activities.

Young Adult Ministry - Jennifer and Eric Williams

Shares faith, fellowship and fun with other young adults.

Other

Ladies of Charity - Winnie Schamerhorn

Plans fundraisers and projects to meet the spiritual and physical needs of the community.

Knights of Columbus - Thomas Kirchner

Fraternal organization that strives for a better world through Christ.

Library - Rosemary Dunne

Manages our library

Ministry in the Commons - Rachel Shenigo and Marge Macdonald

Provides a welcoming atmosphere in the Commons

Newsletter (Our Parish Life) - Joy Swift, editor

Quarterly publication describing parish activities.

Time and Talent Committee - Ann Echols

Assists in updating annual directory of Parish Time and Talent Opportunities and providing information to volunteers.

Prayer and Worship

Liturgical Ministry

Worship and Celebration Committee - Nancy Downey

Offers direction for liturgical aspects of parish life by developing prayer services and liturgical themes.

Altar Servers (4th graders through adult serve Mass.)
Altar Server Coordinators - Linda Contreras

Train and direct altar servers.

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist - Monsignor Rush, and Marge Chamberlin

Distribute Communion at Mass. Training provided.

Lectors  - Trudy Keller

High school students through adult prepare and read the assigned readings and general intercessions at Mass. Training provided.

Liturgical Environment - Marge Denham

Organizes seasonal liturgical items, such as priestly vestments, banners, Christmas and Easter decorations, and altar flowers to enhance the worship space.

Ushers and Greeters - Marie and Jim Martin, and Carmel Fagan

Greet people, take up offering and see to overall well being of the worshiping community.

Writers of the Prayers of the Faithful - Trudy Keller

Correlate the Prayers of the Faithful with the Sunday scriptures.

Hispanic Ministry - Ana and Carlos Bonilla

Facilitates Hispanic participation in our parish life.

Music Ministry

Cantors - Ellen Hinkson

Lead the Assembly in singing. Training provided.

Traditional Choir - Ellen Hinkson

Adult choir leads the Assembly in singing at Saturday afternoon and Sunday 8:00am Mass and special liturgical celebrations. Weekly rehearsals.

Contemporary Music Group - Gerry Bianco

Voices and instruments make a joyful noise and lead Assembly in singing at Sunday 10:00 or 11:00 Mass and other parish celebrations. Weekly rehearsals at 7:30 Wednesdays.

Teen Band and Choir - Mike Logan

Grades 9-12 voices and instruments lead Assembly in singing at 6:00pm Sunday Mass.

Prayer

Prayer Group - Pat Golden

Meets Wednesday evenings in summer and 9:30am Wednesday in winter.

Rosary after Daily Mass - Tom and Pat Golden

Provides childcare during family emergencies.

Helps with English as a second language.

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist in Hospitals - Joe Seiffert

Take Communion to hospitalized parishioners.

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist in Nursing Homes and to the Homebound - Ann Echols,

Take Communion to parishioners who are not able to come to Mass.

Visitors to the Nursing Homes and Homebound - Ann Echols

Friendship visits.

Funeral Liturgy Planner - Marge Chamberlin

Assists families in planning funeral services.

Funeral Receptions - Marge Chamberlin

Prepares and serves receptions after funerals.

Hospital Follow-Up - Glenda Desmond

Call after parishioner is released from hospital to see if help is needed.

Medical Equipment for Parishioners - Paula Warwick

Organizes the medical equipment closet and arranges loans to parishioners.

Monthly Lunch after Late-Morning Mass - Eileen Wiittkopff

Prepares and serves light lunch after Mass.

Nurses - Glenda Desmond

Take blood pressure after Mass, make home visits, organize annual Health Fair.

Phone-A-Friend - Marie Grappone, and Joann Saari

Friendship phone calls.

Prepare-A-Meal - Marie Seiffert

Prepare and deliver home-cooked meals to meet short-term needs of ill parishioners.

Seasonal Food Baskets - Marge Chamberlin

Packs and delivers baskets to the needy at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

Van Transportation to Mass - Calvin Sharp

Provides transportation to and from Mass.

Wedding Committee - Kate Wall

Parish liaison at wedding liturgies.

Social Ministry

Social Ministry Committee - Jiggy Holt

Coordinates charitable projects in the parish and the Lynchburg community.

Adult Care Center - Gwen Naples

A comprehensive program that includes health, social and support services in a protected setting during daytime hours.

Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April - Bill Long

A community-wide effort to improve neighborhood housing.

Churches for Urban Ministry (CUM) - Evelyn Monark and Jim Clark

A group of downtown churches provides seasonal religious parties, tutorial programs for children and adults and assists with their summer Camp Timothy Program.

Daily Bread - Veronica Madden

Furnishes the hungry of the city with a meal seven days a week.

Food Pantry - Catherine Madden

Manages the Holy Cross food pantry.

Gateway-New Land Samaritan Inn - Rob Gray

A shelter for homeless males who are recovering alcoholics and substance users.

Habitat for Humanity - Deborah Silverman

Assists with the building of houses for low-income families.

Interfaith Outreach - Beverly Maslow

An interdenominational organization of sixty-two Catholic, Protestant and Jewish congregations who help with community needs.

Jesse Tree - Marie Bowen

Provides Christmas gifts and food to those in need.

Meals-On-Wheels - Veronica Madden

Volunteers deliver prepared meals to shut-ins.

Miriam’s House - Rhonda Ford

A transitional living program that provides food and shelter for homeless women and their children.

Neighborhood Outreach - Marie Bowen

People working together to rebuild our neighborhood.

Holy Cross Emergency Shelter - Doug Eggleston

Holy Cross Church has been designated as an American Red Cross Emergency Shelter for the neighborhood in case of a disaster.

Peace and Justice Advocacy - Ellen Nygaard

Educational and advocacy projects related to the Church’s teachings on social justice.

Respect Life

Works to ensure that the gift of human life and human dignity are not squandered through abortion, infanticide and euthanasia.

St. Andrew’s Society - Jiggy Holt

Volunteers work on distribution of crops to various food banks.

White Rock Hill Project - Bill Long

Renovates and sustains White Rock Hill Educational Center and supports programs

Christian Formation

Religious Education

Religious Education Committee - Linda Contreras

Creative planning of curriculum and programs and coordinating of special events for Pre-K through 12.

Adult Education - Jane Gorman

Contemporary study of Catholic Christian faith for adults.

Catechists - Linda Contreras

Pre-K through Grade 5: Catechists teach Sunday mornings at all grade levels for a yearlong commitment. Training and an annual retreat will be provided.

Middle and High School Formation/Youth Ministry: Adults work with adolescents by coordinating and teaching the Sunday Evening Teen Program.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word - Marsha Gale

Helps children with age-appropriate Scripture activities during the Readings and Homily.

Nursery/Child Care - Melissa and Ryan Williams

Adult and teen volunteers care for children during Mass.

Summer Church Camp - Beth Ann Good

Adults and teens help with a weeklong adventure in June to make Bible stories come alive.

JustFaith - Wilma Huntington, Evelyn Monark, Russ Beimler

Yearlong study of the Catholic Church’s teaching on Social Justice

Little Rock Scripture Study - Pat Golden, and Patricia Wood

Weekly scripture study and prayer group.

Natural Family Planning - Jennifer and Eric Williams or Brian and Laura Hall (384-1798)

Certified teachers from the Couple-to-Couple League provide instruction in the Church’s only approved method of family planning.

Sacramental Preparation

Baptism - Janet and Joe Zwetolitz

Preparation of parents and godparents for the Sacrament of Baptism.

Baptismal Garments - Celeste Costas, and Saritaa Harvey

Preparation of white baptismal garments for infants.

Preparation of white baptismal garments for adults.

Reconciliation and First Communion - Linda Contreras

Two years of sacramental preparation, usually in grades 1 and 2.

Confirmation - Linda Contreras

Two years of sacramental preparation, usually in 10th and 11th grades.

Matrimony - Monsignor Rush

Meet with Pastor in preparation for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

RCIA-Adults/ RCIC-Children - Joe Marotta, and Linda Contreras

The Rite of Christian Initiation is a yearlong program for adults and children who wish to become members of the Catholic Church.
