Communion of Desire

What is spiritual communion? St. Thomas Aquinas described it as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the most holy sacrament and lovingly embrace him” at a time or in circumstances when we cannot receive him in a sacramental way. Spiritual communion only requires that we open our hearts to Jesus. Countless saints over the centuries practiced spiritual communion in order to grow closer to Christ. Those who come to church to spend time in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, stream Mass from their homes, or pray to our Lord are receiving spiritual communion. Use this prayer to receive these special graces.

Prayer of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus,
I believe that You
are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.
